WHO GIVES apple the RIGHT TO BREAK THE RULES?
I am absolutely livid. I just got off the phone with an “expert” from Apple who had the audacity to tell me that it’s perfectly fine for a checkbox to have absolutely NO label association. Are you kidding me?.
I was navigating a system dialog on a brand-new Mac—a premium machine that costs a fortune—and I hit a checkbox. As I’m tabbing through like any normal person, the screen reader just shouts “checkbox, not checked.” Nothing else. No context. No label. Silence. When I called them out on it, the person from Apple actually said it’s okay that the label doesn’t read when I tab to it. WHAT?!
It is an insulting waste of my time! Why should I be forced to use extra keystrokes and dive into VoiceOver cursor commands just to find out what a button does? Everyone uses ‘Tab’ to fill out forms. Forcing me into a three-key combo dance just to get basic information is the definition of NOT ACCESSIBLE. And then came the ultimate slap in the face: they tried to claim that because it’s not a website, these basic rules don’t apply. Since when does a desktop OS get a free pass to be garbage for blind users? I am done with these excuses! Apple, fix your broken systems and stop gaslighting your users!
We aren’t asking for favors; we are demanding the basic dignity of a usable interface. It’s time for Apple to stop hiding behind “design choices” and start adhering to the accessibility standards they claim to champion. Fix the labels, fix the navigation, and stop treating disabled users like an afterthought!
